Yesterday was a cold and rainy day when we left our home here in New Jersey to go meet Margo in Mystic Island where hurricane Sandy had unleashed its wrath. We knew that we would be helping her with some cleanup work on her waterlogged home.
When our group of 7 arrived at her home, Margo was SO THRILLED that she practically bulldozed us with hugs. She had such a sunny personality that we hardly noticed the rain. Margo’s home was gutted by a Southern Baptist group, but there was still much work to be done.
We dismantled a pool for her, emptied a very waterlogged shed full of her life memories, and pulled two small boats out of the lagoon behind her home. Margo was so overwhelmed by the help that she was receiving. We were so blessed by her warm personality that we didn’t even notice how cold and wet we were.
After 4 hours of work we all sat on her concrete floor, in what used to be her bedroom, the walls gutted out 4 feet from the ground, and enjoyed listening to stories from her childhood. Not only did Margo lose so much from the storm, but her brother died suddenly a week later from a heart attack at age 57. We shared our lunch with her, but, bless her heart, she kept offering to buy us some soup with the $40 that she had in her pocket. She had no kitchen, no bathroom, no bedrooms, and no place for people to sit but she was so hospitable in spite of it all! We prayed forMargo before we left and she hugged us all on our way.
I hope more than anything that those reading this blog will continue to pray for her as she searches for answers in her life. I pray that she will meet Jesus personally very soon.
